Game review for Spy Hunter

Type: NES Arcade Shooter

Player: 1

Story [ripped off NESWorld ]: YOUR MISSION

Pilot your vehicle through the track. Seek and destroy enemy agents who will use every means to wipe you out. You must avoid the road hazards and protect the friendly pedestrian vehicles. There's terror at every turn - tire slashers, torpedoes, bomb dropping helicopters - standing in your way of the most diabolical collection of enemy agents ever to hit a video screen. You have your skill and reflexes along with Smoke screens, Oil slicks, and Heat seeking missiles to outmaneuver your opponents. One mistake and it's all over. So strap yourself in; no need to check your ammo. You've got more than enough; and take the challenge. Be: SPY HUNTER

O.k. as you can see not much for story, but then again if you want a good plot line GO BUY A RPG!!, this here is a shooter.

O.k. my intro, insert game turn on machine, wiggle around game cart until it works, start playing.....
Starting off your car comes out the back end of what appears to be a theft-and-tear-down-shop on wheels, you'll then notice you have a time clock and and then decide to either rack up big points driving on the road or take the cheaters way and drive on the grass on the left side of the screen, since you have unlimited guys until the time runs out you're better off racing on the ground, so just try to blow up any enemy in your path whilst avoiding taking out non-spy vehicles [all of which are not dark blue], keep on playing until death repeat again for about two years until you figure it can't be beat.

I saw this game in the late eighties and thought it was real neat, and a few years back found a pawnshop that had it so I got it, inspite of the above intro, I actually still think its a neat shooter, just gets tiresome and repetative after a while.

The best use of this game would be score challenges between friends and family.

On to the rating catagories......

Play Control: A

Not much to control, just a car or boat that goes up or down, left or right, but it's sensitive enough to use for that split-second decision, only complaint is the weapon toggle system, but if you want alot of cool weapons, something will suffer.

Graphics: B+

Not too much too say, they are detailed, but all it is is a overhead view of small cars and the occasional chopter, if it wasn't for certain flashing in and out of some vehicles when certain weapons are used, or too many vehicles, it would get in the A range.

Sound: A+

Now again only a few sound effects, but what they have are cool, like the missile, or oil slick, it has just the right effect made for each item or crash, same with shooting a car or armored car, the vehicles should make a noise when they explode, but that is about all that keeps it from being realistic

Music: B

Only one song, but it's that real cool Mission Inpossible type theme, and it goes off in intervuals, so you don't get bored with it easely.

Frustration: B

Between no game ending and some seemingly small roads and vicious enemies, you'll toss that controller atleast once.

Suck factor: C+

the game does have a cool conceipt of play, but toggling thrue weapons and enemies taking you out while you get them really sucks!

Repetition Factor: B+

This game is very repeatitive [is that a word?!], even though it, it's still fun to play atleast a few times, but won't please everyone, I arcade shooter fans would appreciate it the most.

No way to beat frustration Factor: A-

This game is inpossible to beat because it is a arcade shooter, but most people try to anyway until the cows come home, or common sense comes back.

Game Rating Overall: A

Not a bad game for being such a early release, [1986], I suggest to obtain a copy just for the unique way of playing, with the multi vehicles and weapon systems, quite original from all others of the day.

Extra: Let's start rumors, o.k. on the game pak's label you see the car, the boat you drive, and a jet and motor cycle, the motor cycle is in the game, but you can't drive it, WHY?!?! also on label is a jet painted the same as the car and boat, but you don't have a jet to drive, WHY?!?!? on the game the bad guy's helicoptor is the spy hunter's universal vehicle color [light grey with red strips], WHY?!?!?!?!

A explaination could be that it was in the original arcade machine [which I have yet to play], or was in the game but later dropped, maybe you can type in a code to get them.

Also the game is dated 1986 and the one I have has the flat head five screws, so it is early enough to be a candidate to hold a famicom game converter, not my copy though, Nintendo always put them in the ones with the security screws, not the flathead ones.

Also; why does the guy look like the lead charecter on the movie "The Soldier"? did he retire and get a new job?

I recommend getting it at around six dollars complete, less for loose, but it also depends if your a player or collector

Thanks Martin for the online text of the story.
